"Our crew handles all the rigging for you!"
Rigging and trolling a live skipjack for tuna can be an exciting and effective technique. The elpescador developed this method and many boats now imitate this. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to rig and troll a live skipjack for tuna: 1. Catching the Skipjack: Start by catching a live skipjack. Use a rod and reel combo suitable for catching these fast-swimming fish. Techniques like casting with lures or using live bait rigs can be effective in enticing skipjack to bite. 2. Keeping the Skipjack Alive: Once you've caught a skipjack, it's important to keep it alive and healthy. Place it in tuna tubes with aerated seawater to maintain its vitality. The elpescador has 4 tuna tubes , the goal is to put 4 skip jack in the tubes. Then catch 4 more to troll with . 3. Preparing the Rig: Use a heavy-duty leader line, around 100 to 150 pounds, to rig the live skipjack. Attach a circle hook to the leader using a strong knot, such as a Palomar knot. Make sure the hook size matches the size of the skipjack and is appropriate for the target tuna species. 4. Hook Placement: Insert the circle hook through the skipjack's nose or mouth, depending on the size of the bait and the hook. This helps keep the bait alive and swimming naturally in the water. 5. Trolling Setup: Set up your trolling gear by attaching the rigged skipjack to a trolling line. Use a heavy-duty rod and reel combo capable of handling the weight and power of a tuna. Make sure the drag is properly set to allow the fish to take the bait without breaking the line. 6. Trolling Speed is no more than 3 knots. the el pescador has a trolling heat to adjust trolling speed. El pescador is the only boat in puerto Vallarta that has this feature and is crucial for attracting tuna 7. Deploying the Bait: Slowly let out the bait behind the boat, ensuring the skipjack remains alive and swimming freely. The distance behind the boat can vary, but starting with around 100 to 200 feet is a good starting point. Adjust the distance based on the conditions and the behavior of the fish. 8. Pay Attention: Keep a close eye on the line and rod tip for any signs of a strike. When a tuna takes the live skipjack, it may initially swim away, causing the line to tighten and the rod tip to bend. Be ready to engage the reel and start the fight! Remember, fishing techniques can vary depending on the specific conditions and preferences of the angler. It's always a good idea to consult with experts on the elpescador for the most up-to-date and effective techniques for rigging and trolling live skipjack for tuna in Puerto Vallarta or any other fishing destination.
